Off We Go … Mary Poppins Delivers the Magic Once Again

Nothing like meeting the family on Christmas Eve, grabbing popcorn, finding an old friend you haven’t encountered in years, and going on a new adventure where anything is possible.  Growing up, the ‘Practically Perfect’ Mary Poppins was always one of my favorites.  It wasn’t just for the tea party on the ceiling or Merry-Go-Round horses, but for the magical feeling that only Mary Poppins can provide at any age.  I remember when Mary Poppins was re-released in the 80s; at that time I found it mesmerizing in a different way than when I was younger.  Then again, when the amazing Julie Andrews sang ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ to my children, I found the magic was still there and even more precious through the eyes of my children.

When I heard they were re-making Mary Poppins, I became quite protective of the cherished tale and did not want that kite to fly again. A year or so later I was flipping through the internet when there is a big hulabaloo about the trailer of Mary Poppins Returns, not a re-boot but the next adventure of our beloved Nanny, with Emily Blunt trying on those beautiful red heels and carrying our chatty Parrot Umbrella friend.  I hesitantly clicked the trailer and low and behold a few notes began play and my heart started to beat faster as I saw that beat up kite take flight once again and come down from the sky with one of my childhood loves.  Mary is back to take care of the Banks children, and you assume it’s the children of the Michael Banks, but it is really to take care of ‘her’ Banks children and that right there is why we love Mary Poppins, for she never really left us, she was always there.  I don’t want to give away any spoilers but if you want to feel just a little bit of that Mary Poppins magic of old, this delightful movie has it in spades!

Every year for Christmas Eve my family meets at the movie theater to see one of the year’s Christmas hits.  There really was no voting this year, I bought the tickets the day they came out and really hoped it was going to be everything I needed it to be.  I was not disappointed; between the charming cast, the costumes, the animation, the toe tapping musical numbers and of course being back on Cherry Tree Lane, it was exactly what I was hoping it would be.  The star-studded cast led by Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda lead us on an all-new fast paced adventure that takes the time to make sure we fall in love with the Banks family all over again.  Just like when we were younger, Mary shows us that anything is possible even the impossible through songs and dance numbers that leave us tapping our toes and wishing we could join the lamp lighters of today like the chimney sweeps of our childhood.  Once again Mary shows us, she is ‘Practically Perfect’ in every way.
